DQ for Week of Sept. 22

Find 3 verses in the Bible (at least one Old Testament and one New Testament) to support your position on how faith & fitness relate to one another. Explain why you chose each verse and the implications for your life. Due Friday, Sept. 26th.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17
"You realize, don't you, that you are the temple of God, and God himself is present in you? No one will get by with vandalizing God's temple, you can be sure of that. God's temple is sacred—and you, remember, are the temple." (The Message)I picked this verse because it talks about God's temple (our bodies) being sacred, which definitely implies that they are worhty of care. And messing up God's work is not ok. (Although I would like to point out that 1 Cor. 6 is about the body being a temple in relation to purity, not fitness)

1 Timothy 4:8 "For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come." I really like this one, because it puts things in perspective. Paul is saying to this younger guy, yeah it's great to be in shape physically, but make sure you have your priorities straight - spiritual fitness is THE most important thing.

Proverbs 31:10-31. I am not going to write the whole thing out, but for those who aren't familiar with it, it's basically about an awesome woman, and what makes her so amazing. (This might not be relevant at all to the guys, but I'm a girl, so it works for me). This woman works really hard at all sorts of things - verse 7 says she has strong arms. But, ultimately he value comes from her faith.

When Daniel was in captivity he asked to be given a diet of vegtables and water and not the unclean food that they were being served Daniel 1:15 says that "At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food." I picked this story/verse because it reminds me that i need to watch what i eat as well as my physical activity, that health doesn't just have to do with physical activity and Christianity is not just about believing in God, but making him your LORD and becoming like him (aka reading your bible, puting him 1st in your life, outreach, worship, spiritual growth).

1st Corinthians 9:24-27 "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize." I picked this verse because it is a good analogy for faith and fitness. it reminds me to stay focused on heaven and not just float through life with out a purpose.

1 Cor 3:16, 17 says "Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God's temple, God will destroy him; for God's temple is sacred, and you are that temple." This is also a good verse because it reminds me that i need to take care of myself and not just sit on a couch all day but also not to overwork myself to exhustion. it reminds me that i don't belong to myself anymore and that i need to respect myself even more because of the One who is in me. ;)
